Am Nordhang des Kyffhäuser, zugehörig zur Verbandsgemeinde Goldene Aue, befindet sich die Stadt Kelbra. Die Stadt entstand im 11. Jahrhundert. Es befand sich eine Burg im nördlichen Stadtgebiet, von der nur noch der Bergfried und die Ruine des Palas erhalten blieb. Es sind noch Reste der Burgmauer zu sehen. Das Kloster, das 1251 errichtet wurde, ist ebenfalls nur noch in Resten erkennbar. Das Rathaus mit dem Fachwerk stammt aus der Zeit der Renaissance. Der Bau erfolgte im Jahr 1777. Das Rathaus ist das wohl am meisten abgebildete Gebäude der Stadt, so auch auf alten Postkarten. Diese Karten sind für Sammler erhältlich.
