Der Landstrich zwischen Bad Doberan, Heiligendamm, Kühlungsborn und Graal, an einem der malerischsten Abschnitte der Ostseeküste gelegen, besitzt eine lange Tradition als See- und Kurbad. Bereits 1793 wurde das erste deutsche Bad in Heiligendamm gegründet. Schnell entwickelte sich die Gegend zum beliebten Feriendomizil des europäischen Hochadels, darunter auch der russischen Zarenfamilie. Diese „aristokratische“ Vergangenheit belegen auch zahlreiche historischen Aufnahmen mondäner Strandpromenaden, so z.B. in Brunshaupten, aufwendig gestalteter Herrenhäuser, wie die Villa Waldesruh in Graal, oder königliche Ruhestätten, wie das Grab der Margarete v. Dänemark in Bad Doberan. Besonders schön sind außerdem die vielfältigen Postkartenmotive der Kirche in Bad Doberan, die auch „die Perle norddeutscher Backsteingotik“ genannt wird, oder der „Molli“ Bäderbahn, die heute noch genauso ihren Dienst verrichtet, wie es schon auf den alten Kartenansichten zu sehen ist.
