Italien ist eine Apenninhalbinsel in Europa und ragt wie ein Stiefel ins Mittelmeer. Angrenzende Staaten sind Frankreich, die Schweiz, Österreich, Slowenien, San Marino und die Vatikanstadt.
Die Vielseitigkeit macht den landschaftlichen Reiz Italiens aus: Schroffe Berggipfel in den Dolomiten, die zwischen ho¬hen Bergen eingeschlossenen oberitalienischen Seen, die Weite der Poebene, die Mittelgebirgslandschaft des Apennin, die sanften Hügelketten Mittelitaliens, weitläufige Flusslandschaften sowie eine über¬aus abwechslungsreiche Küste bestimmen das Bild.
Der italienische Beitrag zum kulturellen und historischen Erbe Europas und der Welt ist beachtenswert. Als Kreuzweg der Zivilisationen des Mittelmeerraumes, Zentrum des Römischen Reiches, Sitz des Papsttums und Wiege der Renaissance spielte Italien eine entscheidende Rolle und wurde zum Ausgangsland der europäischen Kunst, Kultur und Forschung. Einige der schönsten Bauwerke der westlichen Welt, wie das Kolosseum, der Mailänder Dom und der Dom von Florenz, der Schiefe Turm von Pisa und die Paläste Venedigs, bedienen sich in Italien. Neben Fußball ist das Radrennen eine beliebte (Freizeit-)Sportart. Viele Hersteller von Rennrädern sind in Italien beheimatet und viele Italiener schwingen sich am Abend oder an den Wochenenden für eine Tour aufs Rad.
