Russland ist ein Staat in Eurasien. Seine Nachbarländer sind Norwegen, Finnland, Estland, Lettland, Weißrussland und der Ukraine. Das Schwarze Meer trennt die europäischen Grenzen Russlandds von den asiatischen Ländern Georgien,Aserbaidschan sowie mit Kasachstan entlang des Kaspischen Meers.
Während im östlichen Teil Russlands ein neuer Tag beginnt, dämmert es erst im westlichen Teil. Ein großes Problem stellt die Umweltbelastung u. a. in den großen Städten dar – hier werden durch Industriebetriebe zahlreiche Emissionen ausgestoßen. Des Weiteren sorgen überaltete Kernkraftwerke und Atommülldeponien für eine radioaktive Verseuchung.
Für die russische Kultur sind Lew Tolstoi, Alexander Puschkin und Iwan Turgenew bedeutende Persönlichkeiten. Die Architektur ist stark vom Byzanatinischen Reich geprägt. Frühe Sakralbauten orientieren sich wie die byzantinischen am Griechischen Kreuz, das von fünf Kuppeln gekrönt wird, was sich in zahlreichen Ansichtskarten – Motiven widerspiegelt.
Insgesamt haben Russland China vierzehn Nachbarländer mit einer Landgrenze.
