Die Niederlande befindet sich in Westeuropa und grenzt an Belgien im Süden und Deutschland. Zusammen mit Belgien und Luxemburg bilden die Niederlande die Benelux-Staaten. Zu den Niederlanden gehören ferner die drei Karibikinseln Bonaire, Sint Eustatius und Saba. Ungefähr die Hälfte des Landes liegt weniger als einen Meter über, rund ein Viertel des Landes unterhalb des Meeresspiegels (gemessen bei Amsterdam).
Die Niederländer sind bekannt für ihr Traditionsbewusstsein und ihre Heimatliebe. Die Nationalfarbe Oranje, die auf das Königshaus der Oranier zurückgeht, ist nicht nur das Markenzeichen der holländischen Fußballfans, sondern überall im Land allgegenwärtig. So vielfältig das Land ist, so vielfältig auch die Ansichtskarten.
Aus den ehemaligen Kolonien der Niederlande in Südamerika, der Karibik und Südostasien kam seit 1949 eine Vielzahl von Einwanderer ins Land. Mit mehreren aufsehenerregenden Aktionen machten die Molukker von der asiatischen Inselgruppe der Molukken (zum ehemaligen Kolonialgebiet Niederländisch-Indien, heute zu Indonesien gehörend) in den 1970er Jahren auf ihre Entwurzelung aufmerksam. Daraufhin versuchte die Regierung, sie stärker als bisher in die Gesellschaft einzubeziehen und bot ihnen aber gleichzeitig auch Möglichkeiten für die Wahrung ihrer kulturellen Identität.
