Die fünftgrößte Stadt Thüringens umfasst die Ortsteile Gotha (Kernstadt), Boilstädt, Siebleben, Sundhausen und Uelleben. Gotha war von 1640 bis 1918 die Haupt- und Residenzstadt des Herzogtums Sachsen-Gotha. Im Jahre 1820 wurde in der Stadt mit der Gothaer Versicherung das deutsche Versicherungswesen begründet und 1875 im Gothaer Tivoli die Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAP), die sich später in SPD umbenannte. Die Stadt war ein Zentrum des deutschen Verlagswesens, so wurden im Perthes-Verlag vor allem Landkarten erstellt. In der Vergangenheit befand sich Gotha in der Rivalität zu Weimar, dem anderen Zentrum der ernestinischen Dynastie. Während Weimar das künstlerische Zentrum wurde, wurde Gotha sein naturwissenschaftliches Pendant, wovon heute unter anderem das Naturkundemuseum und die Sternwarte Gotha zeugen. Das barocke Schloss Friedenstein dominiert das Stadtbild. Es war früher Residenz der Herzöge von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg und Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha.
Ein bekanntes Unternehmen aus Gotha war die Gothaer Waggonfabrik, die vor allem Straßenbahnen und Flugzeuge produzierte. In Gotha fährt heute mit der Straßenbahn Gotha bzw. der Thüringerwaldbahn eine der letzten Überlandstraßenbahnen Deutschlands (nach Waltershausen und Tabarz).
Beliebte Motive für Postkarten sind unter anderem das Schloss Friedenstein mit Schlosspark und Orangerie, das Gothaer Stadttheater und das Kulturhaus.
Zu den zahlreichen Berühmtheiten, die Gotha hervorgebracht hat, zählen der Maler Hans Winkler und Joseph Meyer, Gründer des Bibliographischen Instituts.
