Der Inselstaat Malta ist ein Archipel, das sich auf die frei Inseln Malta, Gozo und Comino und auf einige unbewohnte Inseln verteilt. Die Hauptstadt Valletta ist durch seinen kulturellen Reichtum zahlreichen Ansichtskarten – Motiven widerzufinden.
Der Name stammt von der punischen Bezeichnung für Zufluchtsort malet, die Griechen nannten die Inseln Melite, bei den Römern hieß sie Melita.
Die Fauna ist wenig artenreich. Das größte frei lebende Tier ist das Fenek genannte wilde Kaninchen, das sich in vielfältiger Form als Nationalgericht auf den Speisekarten präsentiert.
