Der Staat Lettland liegt im Baltikum und grenzt im Süden an Litauen, im Südosten an Weißrussland, im Osten an Russland, im Norden an Estland und im Osten an die Ostsee. Zwei große Gletscherzungen formten vor 25000 bis 12000 Jahren die flache bis wellige, seenreiche Oberfläche.
Trotz der noch bestehenden Gewässerverschmutzung durch die Papier- und Zellstoffindustrie sowie die Altlasten der abgezogenen Sowjetarmee ist das wasserreiche Lettland ein Paradies für Wassersportler und Angler.
Lettland wird kulturell vor allem nordeuropäisch beeinflusst. Die Altstädte weisen die typischen im Raum der Hanse verbreiteten Elemente auf, wie viele Postkarten belegen. Auch die aktuelle lettische Kultur besitzt vielfältige Beziehungen zu Schweden und Finnland, vor allem aber zum norddeutschen Kulturraum.
Die Republik Lettland ist etwas kleiner als Bayern.
