Die Stadt Pirna liegt im Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge und ist im Norden vom Westlausitzer Hügel- und Bergland und im Süden durch das Vorland des Osterzgebirges umgeben. Im Osten gibt die Elbe Ansichten zur Binnenschifffahrt her und im Norden grenzt Pirna unmittelbar an die sächsische Landeshauptstadt Dresden an.
Die Stadt wurde 1233 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt.
Während der DDR gab es hier Großbetriebe die u.a. Kunstseide und Zellstoff herstellten.
Hier wurde übrigens auch die Strömungsmaschine für das erste Passagierstrahlflugzeug (Flugzeug 152) entwickelt, dessen Prototyp 1958 bei seinem allerersten Flug in der Nähe von Ottendorf-Okrilla abstürzte und die gesamte Besatzung in den Tod riss.
Weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten sind die Altstadt mit dem Rathaus und der St. Marien Kirche, Schloss Sonnenstein und dem Richard Wagner Museum mit dem weltweit größten Richard Wagner Denkmal. Für Liebhaber von Wagners Kompositionen sei hier angemerkt, dass die Lohengrin-Komposition zu einem großem Teil in Graupa bei Pirna entstand.
