Die Stadt Tharandt liegt im Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge an der Wilden Weißeritz mit dem Tharandter Wald.
1216 wurde der Ort urkundlich erstmals erwähnt.
Spätestens ab dem Jahre 1811 (durch Gründung der Forstlehranstalt) wurde Tharandt zur Gelehrten- und Studentenstadt, die unter anderem Schiller (vollendete seinen Don Carlos im Gasthof zum Hirsch), Goethe und Kleist besuchten.
Ansichten zeigen die Ruine der Burg Tharandt mit der danebenliegenden Stadt- und Bergkirche ‘Zum Heiligen Kreuz’, das Stadtschloss, das ehemalige Sanatorium Sanitas (heutiges Rathaus) und Ansichten zum Tharandter Wald, der heute als schönster Wald Sachsens gilt.
Der Ort ist als Todesstätte fest mit dem Namen Heinrich Cottas verbunden, einem der Protoplasten der Forstwissenschaft und Bekanntem Johann Wolfgang von Goethes.
